Dealing with Late Assignments – a Quick Win

Have you ever thought about how you administer assignments in Moodle?  I think about it a lot because departments do it differently at Goldsmiths’ and at other places I’ve worked.

One of the issues with assignments is what to do about late ones.  If you allow students to submit late, you run the risk of allowing an initial upload to be over written by a later upload after the deadline.  This can be an innocent mistake, but it could also be a bit of naughtiness designed to buy the uploder a bit of extra time.

In order to get round this some departments have to jump through hoops and end up creating extra admin.  So here is a suggestion:

Create the first assignment with the correct cut off date.  Do not allow any late submissions.  Duplicate the first assignment and rename it to include Late Submission.  Set the availability to open the assignment at the same time as the first assignment closes.  Doing this will allow your students to submit late.  It will mean that the submissions are all in the same place, can be accessed by markers and that the grades will go into the grade-book at the same time as the assignment is marked.
